Millstones at the Stone Square

A place for dressing, storing and selling millstones

A couple of kilometres along the road from Lugnås and the E20 towards the Qvarnstensgruvan mine, you can see a collection of millstones that were abandoned at the “market” or gathered from the forests around Lugnåsberget.

Stentorget was originally a place where millstones were dressed, stored and sold. If something went wrong during the production or transport of the millstones they were often abandoned in the forests, and as you walk along the paths and roads in Lugnås you can see many of their remains today.

Layers of history — In the geopark we find geological phenomena and places that are only found here or in a few places in the world, such as; the peneplane (the bedrock surface) with its flat surface, the table mountains which with their unique rock layers rise from the plain landscape and ice age deposits that create an incomparable landscape. This geology has also created conditions for varied flora, species-rich fauna, exciting cultural and industrial history and active outdoor life. Platåbergens Geopark is a collaboration between nine municipalities; Grästorp, Vänersborg, Trollhättan, Lidköping, Götene, Skara, Falköping, Skövde and Mariestad.
