Layers of history — In the geopark we find geological phenomena and places that are only found here or in a few places in the world, such as; the peneplane (the bedrock surface) with its flat surface, the table mountains which with their unique rock layers rise from the plain landscape and ice age deposits that create an incomparable landscape. This geology has also created conditions for varied flora, species-rich fauna, exciting cultural and industrial history and active outdoor life. Platåbergens Geopark is a collaboration between nine municipalities; Trollhättan, Vänersborg, Grästorp, Lidköping, Götene, Skara, Falköping, Skövde och Mariestad.

Platåbergens Geopark is since 2022 Sweden’s first UNESCO Global Geopark. Today there are 213 geoparks across 48 countries. We collaborate with other geoparks over the world via the Global Geoparks Network and the European Geoparks Network, which aims to connect geoparks all around the world.
